The concept of the automata, or a moving mechanical device meant to act in a way imitating humans, has been around since the ancient Chinese, Greeks, and Ptolemaic Egyptians. They\u00a0 attempted to make machines in the shape of humans to perform useful tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The word robot as a way to describe a fictional human being was coined by <\/span>Josef \u010capek<\/span><\/a> in 1920 and was popularized by his brother Karel \u010capek in his play <\/span>RUR<\/span><\/i><\/a>, or\u00a0 <\/span>Rossum\u2019s Universal Robots<\/span><\/i>. Initially happy to work for humans, the robots in <\/span>RUR<\/span><\/i> eventually revolt and kill their creators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, robots have featured heavily in science fiction, from the Maria robot in Fritz Lang\u2019s highly influential 1927 film <\/span>Metropolis<\/span><\/i><\/a> to Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Robbie, from Isaac Asimov\u2019s <\/span>I, Robot<\/span><\/i>, and Marvin the Paranoid Robot in Douglas Adams\u2019 <\/span>Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
